Given a choice, most burglars prefer an empty house to victimize rather than a home that is occupied. Burglars and thieves are risk averse, and a home that has people inside is a riskier place to steal from. When you are going to be away from your home for a trip, it is a good idea to follow some of these tips to fool criminals into thinking you are home.<\/p>\n

  1. Never indicate on social media such as Facebook, or Twitter that you are planning to be away. Save posting of photographs and comments until you get back. Social media is a great resource for criminals. Warn your kids not to post either and to hold off posting anything about their time away until they return.<\/li>\n
  2. Discontinue newspaper and mail delivery. Nothing says \u201cOn vacation\u201d more than a pile of newspapers on the front porch or stacked against the front door. Although neighbors might be willing to take and hold your mail, it is safer to have the post office do it. That reduces the chance of someone forgetting.<\/li>\n
  3. Place lights on timers and set them to go on and off close to your normal schedule. If possible consider putting a television on a timer \u2013 noise is anathema to a burglar.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
